Casual NDIS Support Workers

The NDIS Support Worker provides direct support to people with psychosocial disability and their carers, to achieve their plan goals and improve personal health and wellbeing. To be successful in this role you must have previous working experience and understanding of mental health and a commitment to making a difference to both the lives of people living with mental health issues, their family and carers.

Location:  Various: Primarily Brisbane. Also Toowoomba and Ipswich.
Classification: Social Community Home Care & Disability Services Industry Award 2010 Level 2
Status: Casual – up to a maximum 38 per week
Reports to: NDIS Coordinator

The Organisation
Arafmi Ltd is a community organisation providing support for families, carers and people with a mental health issue or psychosocial disability. Commencing as a carer self-help group in Brisbane in 1977, Arafmi Brisbane became incorporated in 1986 and since then has developed a broad range of services to support people experiencing mental ill health and their families and carers. These services were initially developed in the Brisbane region and have gradually been extended and adapted to provide support for Arafmi groups and carers in Service areas of Queensland.

Arafmi is a registered provider with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and our support services include:

Accommodation Support Services, Personal Support Services, Clinical & Allied Health Services
Personal, Group and Mutual Self-Help and Support for persons living with severe and persistent, and severe and episodic mental illness
Carer support groups and telephone support
Carer Connect – one on one support for carers
Education for families and carers
Information and referral

Arafmi services are funded by Department of Social Services, Department Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services and Queensland Health.

Purpose of the Position

Program Objectives
As Arafmi responds to individual support requirements for people living with psychosocial disability, under the NDIS a range of work options will exist for Arafmi NDIS Support Workers.
Arafmi NDIS services are delivered with a focus on maintaining and enhancing the viability of the family unit in which a member(s) has a lived experience of psychosocial disability by providing support NDIS plans, personal and family goals
Arafmi aims to increase community inclusiveness and independence for people with lived experience of psychosocial disability, families and carers through the provision of NDIS plans
Arafmi seeks to promote and develop community acceptance, awareness and promote inclusive responses relevant to people with lived experience of psychosocial disability, family and carers.

Key Responsibility Areas

Service Delivery
Work collaboratively with team members to provide high level support for people with a lived experience of psychosocial disability with approved NDIS plans
Provide the necessary practical and emotional support to people with a lived experience of psychosocial disability accordingly to NDIS plans and personal life goals and objectives
Meet the needs of people with a lived experience of psychosocial disability in a manner that preserves their dignity and privacy and is appropriate to their ongoing needs
To participate in assessment and review of the individual needs of people with a lived experience of psychosocial disability guests, families and carers
Assist people with a lived experience of psychosocial disability to develop and/or expand their social relationships and networks in the local community

Team Work

Establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships with people with a lived experience of psychosocial disability, professional colleagues and external service partners
Maintain a safe work environment by following W H & S policies and procedures
Uphold and follow the Arafmi Code of Conduct, maintain a high level of confidentiality and work within the policies and procedures
Actively participate in all staff meetings, training and Arafmi development activities.
Maintain the client files and database as per the procedures
Complete other duties as requested.

Hours of Work

Depending on the service requirements the following working and support arrangements may be offered and available;

rostered shifts
work at short notice
fixed backfill for annual and personal leave
in-home respite
home-based outreach and support
social, recreational and community access
centre based activities
group based work
day-to-day living and accommodation support (this may involve evenings, sleepovers, and/or weekend shifts and working on public holidays)

Key Competencies

Demonstrated experience and skills in working with people with psychosocial disability and their carers
Knowledge and understanding of the issues pertaining to psychosocial disability
Experience in delivering planned support for individuals
Demonstrated confidence and resilience to respond appropriately in emergent situations.
Ability to perform tasks associated within the community environment
Ability to role model and promote positive community attitudes towards people with psychosocial disability
Sound computer and administrative skills including file noting and record keeping

Role Requirements:

Highly desirable Certificate IV/III level qualification in Community Services and or / mental health
Previous experience working as a support person in the mental health/psychosocial disability field
Ability to work flexible working hours (mornings, evening, sleepovers, weekends, public holidays) and be on call
A Current driver’s licence and access to use of personal motor vehicle
All employees must consent to Criminal History Screening/Police check
Yellow/Blue Card
